Welch comenzó en el arte a raíz de una circunstancia personal. El nacimiento de su primer hijo fue todo un desafío , pues había nacido con una discapacidad por lo que tuvo que pasar cuatro años en el hospital observándolo todos los días como le costaba respirar.
Para no volverse loco, Welch decidió llevarse un cuaderno y un lápiz, siendo así el inicio de una fructífera carrera como pintor.
Tuvo una gran influencia artística que fue gracias a las obras de Lucian Freud y Jenny Saville, cuyos motivos y trazos están presentes en sus obras. Sus retratos mostrando cada detalle e imperfección de la piel, así como sus obras en arte figurativo sin prejuicios y con un realismo intenso y salvaje, confieren un aire de particularidad a su trabajo.
Welch no pretende imponer una narrativa, ni tampoco está de acuerdo con la tendencia del arte moderno de explicar la obra a través de un texto separada de la obra misma. Para él, el arte debe ser universal y entendible para todos, no para una élite sofisticada. Sostiene que aunque la pintura nace de un motivo personal, el espectador goza de libre interpretación
Un trabajo que en algunos puntos puede parecer retratar lo grotesco; sin embargo, es más una oda a la belleza de lo real e imperfecto. Espero que lo disfruten.

Welch began in art as a result of a personal circumstance. The birth of his first child was quite a challenge because he was born with a disability so he had to spend four years in the hospital watching him every day as it was difficult to breathe.
In order not to go crazy, Welch decided to take a notebook and a pencil, thus being the beginning of a fruitful career as a painter.
It had a great artistic influence that was thanks to the works of Lucian Freud and Jenny Saville, whose motives and traces are present in its works. His portraits showing every detail and imperfection of the skin, as well as his works in figurative art without prejudice and with an intense and wild realism, give an air of particularity to his work.
